Director of Music (part time)

The Church of the Good Samaritan is a vibrant faith community in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania committed to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent musician with a strong knowledge of vocal technique and excited to work with both professional and volunteer singers. Strong organ skills are a plus.

The adult choir presently consists of 35 members including a professional octet.

The organ in the church is by Austin with an antiphonal division added in 2008 by Walsh. It has a four manual console built by Walsh. The organ in the chapel is a 4-rank Schantz from 1977.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and lead music for 9 am Sunday services in the Anglican choral tradition, working closely with the Rector.
  • Coordinate and lead music for special services (Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Evensong, etc.) and concerts.
  • Recruit and encourage musicians (vocal and instrumental) from within and outside the congregation.
  • Conduct adult choir at all appropriate services.
  • Oversee organist/accompanist, bell choir director, and professional octet.
  • Possibly provide music for weddings, funerals, and 7:30 am Sunday service.
  • Select and purchase music within budget.
  • Prepare and transcribe or arrange music as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in music.
  • Strong conducting skills.
  • Good communication skills—both verbal and written.
  • A vision of worship compatible with the Rector’s.
  • Ability to work in harmony with other staff members.
  • Commitment to spiritual growth.

Hours: Negotiable. Possible to become full-time if candidate is interested in restarting children’s choir with an eye towards starting a Royal Church Music School (RCMS) program.

Salary: Commensurate with hours of work agreed upon with Rector and experience.
